US Strikes Iran’s Kharg Island as Drone Attack Hits UAE Fujairah Oil Port
The conflict in the Middle East has reached a critical new phase. This comes after a series of significant strikes across the region. A drone attack on the United Arab Emirates’ port of Fujairah has caused a major fire and disrupted oil operations, while United States forces have carried out extensive strikes on military targets situated on Iran’s vital Kharg Island.
As tensions continue to mount, the tit-for-tat military actions are raising severe concerns over global energy security and regional stability.
Drone Strike at Fujairah Port
Thick plumes of black smoke rose from the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. This port is one of the largest oil storage and bunkering facilities in the Middle East. The emirate’s media office confirmed that a fire broke out after debris fell during the interception of an incoming drone.
Civil defence forces were quickly deployed to contain the blaze. No casualties have been reported. However, industry sources indicate that some oil-loading operations at the port were temporarily suspended immediately after the incident.
The port of Fujairah holds immense strategic value. It is situated on the Gulf of Oman. This location allows vessels to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime chokepoint. It has seen a dramatic reduction in commercial traffic due to the ongoing conflict. The UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline transports approximately 1.8 million barrels a day to Fujairah, making it a vital outlet for global energy markets.
US Military Action on Kharg Island
The attack on the UAE facility comes shortly after the United States launched a significant military operation. This operation targeted Iran’s Kharg Island. US Central Command reported that American forces struck more than 90 Iranian military targets on the island. These targets included naval mine storage facilities and missile bunkers.
US President Donald Trump stated that the military targets had been “totally obliterated.” He emphasized that the operation deliberately preserved the island’s oil infrastructure.
Kharg Island is often described as Iran’s economic jugular vein. The deep-water terminal handles an estimated 90% of the country’s crude oil exports. In response to the US strikes, Iranian officials maintained a defiant stance. Ehsan Jahanian, a regional political deputy, acknowledged the attacks. He insisted that oil exports from the Kharg terminal are “fully under way.” The facilities remain intact, and there are no casualties among personnel.
Widening Regional Fallout
The exchange of strikes has triggered a broader regional fallout. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued stern warnings. They declared that US interests in the UAE, including ports and military locations, are now considered legitimate targets. The Iranian military has even urged residents in the UAE to evacuate areas close to US facilities to avoid harm.
Over the past weekend, the UAE’s Ministry of Defence reported intercepting numerous ballistic missiles and drones. Similar aerial attacks have been directed at neighbouring nations. Qatar reported intercepted missile strikes. These strikes prompted unprecedented temporary evacuation orders in parts of Doha. Saudi Arabia successfully destroyed multiple drones. It also destroyed a ballistic missile aimed at its eastern and northern regions.
Global Economic Impact and the Strait of Hormuz
The intensification of hostilities has sent shockwaves through global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world’s daily oil supply passes, has become a high-risk zone. Following threats and previous attacks on commercial shipping, maritime traffic through the corridor has plummeted.
The disruption has caused Brent crude oil prices to surge past $100 a barrel. This prompt fears of inflation. It also causes economic instability in oil-importing nations. Some vessels, including certain Indian-flagged tankers, have managed to navigate the strait safely. However, major shipping firms have largely suspended operations in the area. They are opting for the longer and more costly route around the southern tip of Africa.
Diplomatic Efforts Amidst the Crisis
As the military conflict expands, diplomatic efforts are struggling to keep pace. French President Emmanuel Macron has urgently called for de-escalation, urging Israel to refrain from extensive ground offensives in Lebanon. Macron has offered to host direct ceasefire talks in Paris between Israeli and Lebanese officials. He has warned that “everything must be done to prevent Lebanon from descending into chaos.”
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has declared that the conflict with Iran is entering a “decisive phase.” Iran continues to vow retaliation. Therefore, the prospects for an immediate cessation of hostilities remain uncertain. The international community watches closely as the stakes in the Gulf continue to rise. This situation threatens not only regional peace but also the stability of the global economy.
