Zelensky meets Trump in Florida as US steps up diplomacy after Kyiv attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Florida on Sunday for talks with US President Donald Trump. Washington is intensifying diplomatic efforts. These efforts aim to end the war in Ukraine after a major Russian assault on Kyiv.

The meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence comes days after a significant missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital. This recent attack left parts of the city without power and heating. It also caused civilian casualties. Ukrainian officials have described the strikes as a deliberate escalation while peace efforts continue.
Before the talks, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was their first publicly acknowledged conversation since October. Both the White House and the Kremlin said the discussion was “productive”. Neither side released details of any concrete agreements.
Trump said the call took place shortly before his scheduled meeting with Zelensky. He described it as part of a broader effort to push both sides toward negotiations. The Kremlin confirmed the conversation, with a Russian envoy saying it focused on possible diplomatic pathways.
Focus on security and peace framework
The Florida talks are expected to centre on a revised peace framework being promoted by Kyiv. There are also proposals for US-backed security guarantees aimed at preventing future Russian aggression. Zelensky has argued that recent attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure have occurred. These attacks show Moscow is not currently prepared to commit to peace.
US lawmakers close to the administration said Zelensky is arriving with what they describe as a “workable” proposal. They acknowledged that bridging the gap between Kyiv and Moscow would remain difficult.
Trump has said he wants a permanent end to the conflict. He does not want a temporary ceasefire. Senior Republicans have pointed to economic pressure and sanctions on Russia. These are seen as key tools in forcing negotiations.
War continues as diplomacy unfolds
While diplomatic talks take place in Florida, fighting has continued on the ground. Ukrainian authorities say repair crews are still working to restore electricity and heating in parts of Kyiv. These areas were damaged during the latest attacks. Winter temperatures remain below freezing.
Russia’s defence ministry has stated its recent strikes targeted energy facilities. It claims these facilities are linked to Ukraine’s military sector. Meanwhile, Ukraine and its allies accuse Moscow of deliberately hitting civilian infrastructure.
European leaders are closely watching the meeting between Trump and Zelensky. They have reiterated support for Ukraine. They also stressed the need for strong security guarantees in any future settlement.
As of Sunday afternoon, no outcome from the Florida talks had been announced. US officials said discussions were expected to continue. Washington is positioning itself as the central mediator between Kyiv and Moscow in the days ahead.
